What is Geneious Cloud?
Geneious Cloud provides a secure workspace on the cloud for storing your data. We manage this for you so there is no need to set up and maintain your own servers.
With our Team subscription, you get a shared workspace that provides access-controlled collaboration and centralized data management. On a personal subscription, your workspace allows you to keep your data backed up and accessible from any computer.
To get started, see How to start using Geneious Cloud.
A cloud workspace is included with all new subscriptions purchased through geneious.com from 21 March 2024. If you have not received access to a Geneious Cloud workspace through your subscription, and would like to learn more about available options, please contact us.
Can I trial Geneious Cloud?
Yes, please contact us to discuss the options.
Is Geneious Cloud secure?
Yes, we are ISO27001 certified and you can read more about how we keep your data secure at https://www.geneious.com/security/
Can Geneious Cloud be hosted on a private cloud?
No, Geneious Cloud is hosted by Geneious on our own AWS infrastructure.
Is Geneious Prime running in a browser?
No - Geneious Prime is a desktop application. Geneious Cloud allows you to store store data on the cloud from directly inside Geneious Prime. Computation is still performed locally on your computer.
Does Geneious Cloud support storing NGS data?
Technically, yes. However, all data must be transferred to your computer for local processing so this can be slow and you still require enough memory to store and analyze the data. If storing and performing analysis on NGS in the cloud is a feature you would find useful, please contact us.
How much data can I store in Geneious Cloud?
Refer to our plan details on https://www.geneious.com/pricing/ . If you would like to discuss additional storage, please contact us.
What happens if I exceed my storage limit?
You will be prevented from uploading more data until some space is freed up. You will not be automatically charged for additional storage.
What happens to my data when my license expires?
Refer to What happens when my subscription expires?
Backing up your data in Geneious Cloud
Data that is in Geneious Cloud is stored securely on the cloud so it is backed up by us already. However, we recommend keeping an offline backup. To do this, either keep a copy of your data in the Local database or export your Geneious Cloud folders to Geneious format.
If you delete data in Geneious Cloud you will notified that the data will be moved to your 'deleted items' folder.
Documents within the Cloud Database deleted items folder will be cleared after 30 days. You can view the expiration date of documents within the Deleted Items folder (this does not apply to local documents).
Note that there are two 'deleted items' folders, one within your Local Database, and another within the Cloud Database. Items can be recovered from the Deleted Items folders. However, if you delete items from this folder, you will be notified that they are being permanently erased and cannot be recovered.
Does Geneious Cloud backup my local database?
Not automatically - Data that is in your local database is not automatically backed up to Geneious Cloud. To backup data in your local database you need to copy this data to Geneious Cloud.
We recommend taking regular backups of your Geneious Prime local database using the Geneious Backup Tool. Also, note that backup of the Local database does not include documents within your Cloud database.
Can I run computationally intensive jobs on Geneious Cloud?
No - if this is a feature you would find useful, please contact us.
Can we move our Shared Database to Geneious Cloud?
Yes, although there are some limitations when doing so. Data can be transferred from a shared database to Geneious Cloud simply via drag and drop inside Geneious Prime. However, access controls need to be recreated manually and there are some other important considerations.
If you would like to migrate from a shared database to Geneious Cloud, please contact us for assistance.
Can I access my Geneious Biologics data through Geneious Cloud?
Yes, log in to Geneious Cloud with your Geneious Biologics email and password to access your Geneious Biologics data. SSO is not supported currently. More information can be found here.
How do we block Geneious Cloud at our organization?
As an IT administrator if you would like to block the access to Geneious Cloud, you can do so by updating the geneious.properties file within the Geneious installation directory. Uncomment (by removing the #) the following line and distribute this file to your workstations to disable cloud for all the users of your organisation.
disable-plugins=com.biomatters.plugins.cloud.CloudPlugin
More information can be found here
If you'd like to disable Geneious Cloud as an individual, we recommend disabling the plugin by going to Tools -> Preferences -> Plugins and Features -> Customize Feature Set and disabling "Geneious Cloud Workspace".
Does Geneious Cloud have a REST API or similar for integration?
Yes, a REST API is available as part of the Geneious Enterprise plan for uploading data programmatically.
