1. Why are Floating Licenses being retired?
Floating Licenses were built on older technology that limits our ability to deliver modern features. By moving to user-based licenses, we can provide:
- Cloud capabilities for secure, anywhere access.
- Improved license management and provisioning tools.
- Better alignment with industry standards and IT requirements.
2. When will Floating Licenses no longer be available?
- October 1, 2025: Floating Licenses will no longer be sold.
- September 30, 2026: Floating Licence EOL.
- Geneious Prime 2027.0: Floating Licenses will not be compatible with this release or later.
3. What happens to my existing Floating Licenses?
You can continue using them until your renewal date. However, all customers must transition to a user-based license within 12 months of October 1, 2025, to stay supported and compatible with future versions of Geneious Prime.
4. How will my seats be mapped during the transition?
Your current number of floating seats will be mapped to user-based seats. Our team will work with you to make sure your lab setup is covered and that occasional users have appropriate access through Team or Enterprise plans.
5. What if I only have occasional users who don’t need constant access?
Team and Enterprise licenses are designed to handle these scenarios. You’ll be able to reassign seats quickly and manage activations through an online admin dashboard, ensuring occasional users are still supported.
6. Will this increase my costs?
Pricing reflects the additional capabilities included with the new licensing model, such as Geneious Cloud and enhanced collaboration tools. In many cases, customers find that the productivity gains and simplified administration offset any cost difference. Your account manager can provide a tailored comparison.
7. How will license administration change?
- Users will log in with their email instead of using a license key. Please see the instructions here How to activate a Geneious Prime license (Where is my License Key)?
- Admins can assign and reassign seats in real time through the My Account portal. Administration of Team and Enterprise subscriptions
- Reports and exports are available to track usage and manage compliance.
8. What happens if I don’t switch?
Floating Licenses will not work with Geneious Prime 2027.0 or later. If you do not transition before then, you will lose access to updates, support, and compatibility with future operating systems.
