As of August 2025, NCBI Blast will be using a new default protein search database ClusteredNR.
In summary, the new database enables:
- Faster searches
- Decreased redundancy in results
- Broader taxonomic coverage in results
Geneious Prime currently defaults to the previous nr database, but you can add the new database by going to Tools > Blast > Add/Remove Databases > Setup Blast Services. Set "NCBI" as the service, then click "Edit Databases".
When adding the new database, the database name must be clustered_nr
. Other fields can be customised to your preference, but cannot be empty.
