Recently, Apple announced that macOS Tahoe (macOS 26) will be the last macOS operating system that will run on Intel-x86-based Macs. Also, Apple will be phasing out Rosetta 2 (that allows macs with Apple Silicon chips to run applications that were originally written for intel-based macs) with macOS 28 expected to release late 2027.
All users running Geneious Prime on the latest macOS Tahoe (macOS 26) may start seeing the below warning message from Apple indicating end of support for Intel-Based applications.
What does this mean for Geneious Prime users on macOS
Users running Geneious Prime on Apple Silicon-based Hardware - Make sure that you are on Geneious Prime 2025.1 or later version. Geneious Prime 2025.1 and later has native support for Apple Silicon Macs (except some third party plugins and features such as Primer Design, may still rely on Rosetta 2 internally but we are working on to update these progressively). Please see Release Notes for continued updates in upcoming releases.
Users who want to run Geneious Prime on Intel-based Mac computers - You will need to remain on macOS 26 or earlier if you want to keep using Intel-based Mac computers.
Users who want to continue running Geneious Prime 2025.0 or earlier - You will not be able to run Geneious Prime on newer versions of macOS (starting macOS 28).
