When you update to macOS 27 Golden Gate, Apple removes Rosetta 2 from your Mac. Rosetta is the translation layer that lets software built for Intel processors run on Apple silicon Macs. Although Geneious Prime runs natively on Apple silicon, some of its features still rely on Rosetta, and these will not work until Rosetta is reinstalled.
If you use one of these features without Rosetta installed, Geneious Prime will show a message letting you know that Rosetta is required.
How to reinstall Rosetta
You can install Rosetta manually:
- Open Terminal (in Applications > Utilities).
- Enter the following command and press Return:
softwareupdate --install-rosetta --agree-to-license
About the “support for Intel-based apps is ending” warning
After upgrading, macOS may warn you after you restart your Mac or occasionally when using a feature that relies on Rosetta. The warning says that support for Intel-based apps is ending and that the app will not open in a future version of macOS. You may also see Geneious Prime listed under System Settings > General > About > Intel-Based Apps > Details.
This warning is expected. Apple has announced that macOS 28 will no longer support Rosetta for general use. We plan to update the affected features to run natively on Apple silicon before macOS 28 is released, so you will not need Rosetta at that point. Until then, you can keep using Geneious Prime normally with Rosetta installed.
